The chain stitch is a decorative stitch, usually used in embroidery. It looks complicated but it's actually really simple. Here's how to do it:
STEP ONE:
Start with your thread coming up through the fabric.
STEP TWO:
Put your needle back in where it came from, or right next to where your thread is coming out.
STEP THREE:
Pull the needle through the fabric, but don't pull all the way. Leave a loop of thread behind.
STEP FOUR:
Bring your needle back through the fabric, inside the loop of thread you left behind in the previous step.
STEP FIVE:
Pull it all the way now and the loop of thread should tighten around your new stitch, creating a chain.
And voila! You now know how to chain stitch!
